Green Bay, WI -  Mr. Acker Bilk and "Stranger On The Shore" is a soft, strange song from the early 1960's featuring a clarinet player named Acker Bilk who insisted on being called "Mr." It was a catchy name for DJ's to use on the radio.

Bob McGinn always gets a kick out of that story.

McGinn, 65, is retiring from JSOnline. (Actually forced to take a newspaper "buyout.") 40 years of excellence on the Packers beat. After an NFL game, you rush downstairs. You have maybe 20 minutes to ask 20 key players/coaches what was the turning point of the game. What happened on that penalty, that one play? You hope you got it right before they close the doors. The next morning you read Bob McGinn's game story to see if you even came close to the best column in the NFL.

We were into our 20th hour of NFL Draft coverage Saturday. I looked over thinking "look at this guy still grinding." Laptop. Legal pad filled. Quotes in shorthand. Stats. Tape recorder. Typing, deadline speed. Eyeglasses. The master at work.

Deep, long-time league sources. Experience. History. Stats, Records. Killer stories. Accuracy. Common sense. Covering the Packers will be a lot less fun without Mr. Bob McGinn.  READ MORE
