GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Packers have placed safety Raven Greene on injured reserve with an ankle injury, the team announced Monday.

Greene, 24, was entering his second NFL season as a key cog in Mike Pettine's defense. After playing in eight games last year, he was part of the starting unit for Week 1 against the Bears.

Defensive back Will Redmond took over Greene's role in the defense following the injury in the second half of Sunday's win over the Vikings. He is likely to continue in that role moving forward. Greene will be eligible to return, if granted that designation, before season's end.

The team claimed defensive back/return specialist Tremon Smith off waivers from the Chiefs to fill Greene's roster spot.
