Green Bay, WI - The Packers have hired a new offensive coordinator.

Nathaniel Hackett, 39, will replace Joe Philbin as the team's offensive coordinator. Philbin interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings last week for the offensive line coach position.  Packers offensive line coach James Campen, part of the Green Bay staff since 2004, has accepted a job with the Cleveland Browns as associate head coach / offensive line coach.

Hackett was fired as the offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars after they lost 24-21 to the Buffalo Bills November 26th, 2018. It was the Jags seventh straight loss, falling to 3-8, after playing in the AFC Championship game a year ago. They lost to the Patriots 24-20.

"We would like to thank Nathaniel for his hard work and dedication to the Jaguars organization, and we wish him and his family the best moving forward," head coach Doug Marrone said in a press statement. "These are always tough decisions, but as the head coach, I have to do what I think is best for this football team."

"It wasn't anything negative. Doug just decided to make a move," Hackett told the NFL Network. "I guess he didn't think I was good enough, that's the only thing I can think of. It's a shock. I knew Doug had thought about it. I guess the football Gods had it out for me. We started off hot, had so many injuries, we were a completely different team. Guys busted their butts, but you can only do so much. I wish I could've figured something out."

Hackett joined the Jaguars in 2015 as quarterbacks coach.

He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016 after the team fired previous OC Greg Olsen. He kept the job when Marrone took over full-time in 2017. Stuck with an inconsistent quarterback, Blake Bortles, Hackett employed a run-heavy offense to avoid Bortles throwing on key downs.

On the same day Marrone fired Hackett, he also benched Bortles in favor of back-up QB Cody Kessler.

Hackett had served as Marrone's offensive coordinator at Syracuse in 2011-12, and then followed him to the Buffalo Bills from 2013 to 2014. When Marrone was hired by the Jaguars in 2015, he brought Hackett along again, first as quarterbacks coach, then as his OC in Jacksonville.

Here's a bit of irony.

Nathaniel Hackett is the son of Paul Hackett, 71, who 30 years ago, in 1989, hired a young man from Pittsburgh who worked overnights in a turnpike toll booth as a graduate assistant. Hackett was the head coach of the Pitt Panthers. Later, when Hackett was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as offensive coordinator in 1993, with Joe Montana at quarterback, he brought the grad assistant along with him.

His name was Mike McCarthy.  READ MORE
