Green Bay, WI - Does it seem like the Green Bay Packers always pick a defensive player in the first round?

Well, they do.

For the eighth straight year the Packers selected not one, but two players to help their defense.

Packers GM Brian Gutenkunst, with the 12th pick overall, selected Michigan defensive end and edge rusher Rashan Gary, a junior at Michigan.

Gary missed the final two games last season, to Ohio State, and a bowl game against Florida, both losses for Michigan.

It was reported he had been dealing with a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

"I just can’t wait to work. I think I can do a lot of things and if they want me to play that position (outside linebacker). I’m ready to do so," Gary told reporters from a draft party held in his honor in Ann Arbor. He chose not to make the trip to Nashville where the draft is being held.

"And my shoulder is 110 percent, I just can’t wait to strap back on the pads and get ready."

"My shoulder’s good. It’s not a torn labrum. It's a subluxation. But I did 26 reps at the combine and I’m ready to go and I’m ready to be great right now."

The Packers then traded up, from 30th overall to the 21st spot in the 1st round for Darnell Savage Jr. a safety from Maryland.

If you have not heard of Savage, neither have NFL draft experts. None of them had Savage going in the first round, much less a team trading up to get him.

But Packers GM Brian Gutenkunst said the Packers need help at safety, and there were not a lot of safeties in the this year's draft.

The Packers thought Savage was by far the best in this draft class. By trading up to 21, Green Bay made Savage the first safety taken in this year's draft.

The cost was three picks. For the 21st slot, Gutenkunst gave the Seattle Seahawks his 30th pick overall, and two fourth round picks on Saturday, at 114 anad 118.

That left the Packers with six picks headed into Friday night's draft. One in the second round. Another in the third round. And four picks through rounds 5,6, and 7 on Saturday.
