Week 1: 10-5-1

Total: 10-5-1

CINCINNATI (+1) over Baltimore

I was pretty confident about my picks going into last week and had I thrown down your money, I would have done quite well for yourself. But this week I gotta tell you, these lines scare the hell out of me. They say Week 1 is the hardest week to pick because of all the uncertainty, but I would argue it's Week 2 because of all the overreaction. A lot of my feelings this week are going to be betting against the improbable. For example, if I see a line and think "Man, that team can't start 0-2" or "there's no way they are undefeated after two weeks", that's where I will throw your money. Good luck! Let's start with a win for the home team.

Carolina (+6) over Atlanta

I am totally buying in to the anti-Matt Ryan establishment and six points is too much for me to stay away from a Carolina team that I really like.

WASHINGTON (-6) over Indianapolis

Conversely, six points is just right for me to take the home team here. Showers are expected in DC all weekend and even though I don't have numbers on this, the Bart Eye Test tells me that when the Colts wear their whites on the road and get them dirty, they lose. Again, no facts or figures but it's easy for me to see the Colts lose a sloppy game. If this game was Indy I'd take the Colts as high as -6.

GREEN BAY (-1) over Minnesota

This line is based on the thought that Rodgers is playing, of course. But I think Rodgers is playing and the Packers will win. My years long crusade to prove to people that the Vikings are overrated will be proven correct in time, I promise.

BUFFALO (+7) over Los Angeles

This is the most fascinating line of the week to me. I like Buffalo to cover. I have been talking down on Buffalo all week but I am not on board with a Chargers team that looked rough last week and has to travel all the way across the country. The Chargers should win this game and they should win by double digits. But this is the NFL, where anything can happen and it always does. Give me the points.

TENNESSEE (+2) over Houston

Wrote this column. Had Houston. Changed it before I published. I hate this game.

PITTSBURGH (-4.5) over Kansas City

I love Kansas City this season but things won't be as easy on the road for Mahomes and Co. as they were last week. Big Ben gets back in his comfortable settings of Heinz Field and the Steelers improve to 1-0-1 to, stay, undefeated?

Miami (+3) over NEW YORK JETS

I hate this game too but just as was the case with Mahomes, things went a little too well for Darnold last week. The Dolphins get a win and start the season a surprising 2-0. The 1972 Dolphins do not get nervous.

TAMPA BAY (+3) over Philadelphia

Upset special! FitzMagic continues, the whispers that Jameis Winston will not be the starter after suspension get louder, and Carson Wentz is magically cleared for contact next week.

NEW ORLEANS (-9) over Cleveland

I like the Browns personally along with the rest of the country but the Saints aren't going to lose their first two games of the season to the Bucs and the Browns. This would be my survivor pick if I was still in my pool. Thanks for nothing, Detroit!

LOS ANGELES RAMS (-13) over Arizona

This spread seems high and I want to take Arizona for that reason, but it's also not this high by accident. Rams with an easy win. Josh Rosen starts next week.

Detroit (+6) over SAN FRANCISCO

Wrote this column. Had San Fran. Published San Fran. Changed it after I published. I hate this game.

JACKSONVILLE (even) over New England

Straight up games are no fun! There are two options here - New England by 20 or Jacksonville by 3. I'll give the Jaguars their rightful revenge.

DENVER (-6) over Oakland

No Denver Double Down for me this week but I do like them to continue their winning ways at home in September.

New York Giants (+3) over DALLAS

Just a sneaky feeling on this one because it's Sunday Night Football.

SEATTLE (+3.5) over Chicago

Did they watch the second half of Chicago vs Green Bay before they made this line? I like Seattle in the upset.
